The Department of Energy has awarded nearly $1 million to Xiaoqing Song, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Arkansas, member of the UA Power Group and director of the Power Switch Lab. The funding will support Song’s research aimed at developing smaller, more reliable fast-charging stations for electric vehicles. Song’s work centers on power modules that regulate electricity flow by swiftly switching a current on and off. The project’s objective is to create a prototype for high-voltage power modules using silicon carbide, a wide bandgap semiconductor capable of handling higher voltages and temperatures than traditional silicon.
